I am Heartbroken, but so is He

Someone asked me today on Twitter after the bombings in Boston how I could cry out to a God that could’ve stopped this.

I think it’s important to remember in these times that God gave us the gift of free will and, we live in a very  broken world.

We don’t have to choose Him; HE wants us to come to him of our own free will!

Its our choice to choose to know HIM, and it’s pretty radical if you think of it. We were made in His image, but we were also given the choice to NOT choose Him.

And we most certainly  do live in a broken world. We can’t turn around without hearing something AWFUL in the news, and what we saw today was horrifying.

I believe that  these things break His heart as much as they break ours. I believe He weeps for the all those affected in Boston, and around the world.

Going to sleep tonight praying the victims. Will you join me?

GOD hears the prayers of our wounded hearts.

It Broke HIS Heart, too

There are no words.

I, like most of you, have gone through a myriad of emotions: outrage, anger, sadness, disillusionment, confusion and fear (for our society).

After all of those emotions I find myself clinging, clinging to my faith, and clinging to our GOD.

I have heard many people lash out and ask, “why would GOD allow this to happen?” I cannot answer that emphatically, but I can only tell you what I know to be true in my heart, and HE  is the very cornerstone of my being.

What transpired on December 14th at 9:30 AM EST broke Jesus’ heart, just as it break yours now.

(In John 11:35 it says Jesus wept.)

Even before that fateful morning I believe His heart was breaking…for Adam Lanza. Because, in my opinion, while Adam Lanza was most likely disturbed–he was also afflicted–with pure evil.

The kind of evil that can cause you to shoot your own mother in the face at point-blank range, drive to a school to murder 26 beautiful souls, then turn the gun on yourself.

The kind of evil that only comes from one source–Satan.

We live in a fallen world, one only needs to look around for the evidence–shootings at malls, movie theaters and schools. That’s Satan at work.

BUT, in the midst of all of this, there is beauty, there is grace, there  is love, and that is GOD.

You see GOD gave us a lot of gifts; but one of the most radical ones he gave us was free will. Imagine how hard that was for Him. “Hmm…let’s see, I’ll give this one the extraordinary gift of song; I love her so!! I created her in my own image, but I want her to love me and choose me, therefore I will give her free will.”

And so it was the same with Adam Lanza. I believe that GOD was ever-present in this young man’s life but I don’t believe Adam Lanza CHOSE God. This much is very clear to me.

I relay all of this to remind you that every day we have a choice–to serve ourselves–or serve someone greater.

Every day we can choose to do for ourselves, or do for others (agape love).

Every day we can make a conscious effort to be that lifeline for someone, anyone. It may be a stranger, or your cube-mate at work, or it may be a family member or friend. All I know is we’ve got to start taking better care of one another. That could simply mean saying you are sorry, or doing a favor for someone that cannot possibly repay you. Or it may mean more, MUCH more. ”60 Minutes” has reported that in almost all school shootings, the victim told someone of his intent to commit the attack. This fact shakes me to my core, but in a weird way it also inspires me..to do more, to be more. I want to love with reckless abandon; I want to give until it hurts; I want to be someone’s lifeline. You can be, too. Just open your eyes. The opportunity to “leak Jesus” is all around you.

And if you are reading this, and you don’t believe, well selfishly I want you to, because I want you to have the same peace I have  in crazy times like these. I want you to have the same UNSPEAKBLE and UNQUENCHABLE joy I have; but regardless of what you do with your free will, I urge you to LOVE ON, my friend.

Throw off the chains that may bind you, keep your eyes open, your mind vigilant, and look for the people in this world that DESPERATELY need YOUR touch.

GOD BLESS YOU!

Hello all,

Welcome, I am SO proud to debut my revamped site. I want to thank Brandon Rome and Seth Graybeal from Catalyst Media for a job well done. They spent tireless hours getting my website just right and I am extremely grateful!

We are now only 79 days away from the 2011 college football season and I am stoked!  All this conference expansion talk has left me dizzy.  I knew the landscape was going to change, but I am really glad there was not a seismic shift, as some analysts suggested. Change is good, and inevitable, but give it to me a little at a time.

There were a great number of players drafted from the SEC; I can’t wait to see what impact they have in the NFL in 2011.

Thanks for visiting my site. Feel free to bookmark it; follow me on twitter/facebook, and let me hear from you. You can also hear my weekly segment on Johnny ” Ballpark” Franks show under the radio tab.

Have a safe and lovely summer.

GOD bless,

Rachel Baribeau

The longer I live, the more I realize life is ALL about developing relationships….

Blame it on the weather, but this reporter is a little nostalgic. The dust has settled on the National Championship and spring is upon us. A time of rebirth in so many ways, you need not look far to see the signs; from a budding flower, to a golfer desperately looking for a story off the course of life, to a football player shedding his former skin and developing into a creature that is a force to be reckoned with, the signs are all around us.

For me it is a time of introspection, a time to reflect on what we have accomplished here at TideSportsExtra.com, both professionally and personally. It has been a PHENOMENAL run thus far. If the work we have done is any indication of what is to come, then be prepared for only the best.

It is customary to for me to take something from every story that I am involved with. It’s just how I am built. I cannot help but leave something with the people I come in contact with, and inevitably I take something from all those I encounter as well. And I’ve learned in my life that this is a precious opportunity and it is lost on some (how sad). It is the chance to make a difference, either positively or negatively.

Jackie Robinson said it best, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” It is a quote I try to live by.

Looking back on some of the amazing opportunities I have had since joining TSE, I am struck by the caliber of people I have come into contact with. There is John Croyle, the famous defensive end that became even more famous for giving thousands of kids a chance for a normal life by plucking them from unspeakable abuse (www.bigoak.org). Our whole crew ( Sean, Rattey and myself) was moved, I believe in a life changing way, by his story and what he has accomplished. I don’t know that I have ever been more proud of any piece of work than the John Croyle piece.

Most recently, I got a chance to visit with Dr. James Andrews; the rock star of orthopedic surgeons, as I like to call him. This man has done more Tommy John’s surgeries than you can shake a stick at, the number is somewhere over 2,500 and he shows no sign of stopping. He has cut on everyone from Jack Nicklaus to Bo Jackson and probably the teenager you’ve never heard of that can’t afford the surgery he so desperately needs. He is also the man that is preventing future injuries by helping to institute a pitch count in little league, and educating parents on the dangers of over usage and fatigue in sports. Through all of this he has stayed grounded and is probably one of the most humble human beings I have had the pleasure of meeting, ever.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention another group of people that I have had the honor of working with, and that is you the fans. You make my job worth doing. I feel like I am a storyteller in a sense and it is my extreme pleasure to be able to bring you the story. When I get feedback that you were moved; or felt the same way about a story, well that is all the validation I need.

So I want to thank you and tell you that it is an honor to bring you the stories that we do.

This reporter is signing off, I am headed out to chase that next BIG story.
